LDMS Photos Spring 09

Page history last edited by Elise Sheffield 5 mos ago
In late April, 50 6th graders from Lylburn Downing Middle School followed Town Branch (their creek) to Jordan's Point next to the Maury River.  Here are photos of some of the activities they did as watershed investigators.
LDMS Watershed Investigator learned how to calculate how many gallons of rain wash across a section of parking lot after a one-inch rain.  First they figured out the area of the section. The students also learned how to calculate the velocity of a stream by launching tiny boats and timing their speed for 10 meters -- notice the unique swan shape of this winning boat!
Working with a scientist from Virginia DEQ, the students assessed the biological health of Woods Creek. At this point, the creek has run through the city of Lexington and is just about to enter the Maury. Often the number and diversity of macro-invertebrates found in the nets at this point along Woods Creek are low.  Today they were better.  The water quality earned a score of "good."
